Influence of Principals’ Support for Teacher Professional Development (TPD) on the Development of Students’ Global Citizenship Skills in Catholic Private Secondary Schools in Nakuru County

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of principals’ support for Teacher Professional Development (TPD) on the development of students’ global citizenship skills in Catholic Private Secondary Schools in Nakuru County, the study adopted mixed methods research, the target population consisted of all the 10 private catholic schools, 10 principals, 442 teachers, 1020 students, and one education secretary. Quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS V. 21.0). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Qualitative data were analyzed inform of themes and interpreted into narratives and direct quotations. The results showed that principals’ support for teacher professional development influenced global citizenship skills in private Catholic secondary schools in Nakuru County (β= 0.815; P < 0.05). It was recommended that since citizenship skill training is not offered to teachers in majority of the schools under investigation, there is a need for the Ministry of Education in Kenya to train teachers and develop their citizenship skills, there is also a need for principals to teachers for their professional development.
